International connections

Reaching a wider audience

We recruit students from a number of countries around the world, including Australia, Iceland, Norway, Japan and the USA – bringing them together with a mix of students from the UK and the EU.

There are two ways for international students to study at the College. We offer programmes delivered by distance learning, which make remote study an attractive and achievable aspiration. However, international students are also well represented on many of our full-time programmes, including, of course, our International Foundation Programme.

Visas and Immigration
To study in the UK you will need to obtain a visa issued by the UK Border Agency (UKBA).

The UK operates a points-based immigration system which affects students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. The College holds a Tier 4 Sponsor Licence.

If you are made an offer of a place by the College and choose to accept it you will be issued with a ‘Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies’ (CAS) number’ which you will need to apply for a visa.

When making your visa application you will also have to prove that you can meet the cost of the tuition fees and your maintenance without working in the UK or claiming public funds.

It is the responsibility of individual students to make sure they understand and meet the immigration requirements of the UK and the UKBA is the primary source of information at www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/

The Council for International Student affairs (UKCISA) www.ukcisa.org.uk and the British Council www.educationuk.org  also provide useful information and help to students wishing to study in the UK.

The College provides international educational experiences for many of its own students. Our programmes are enriched by a commitment to multicultural, cross-cultural and intercultural practices. Leading international practitioners such as Robert Lepage and Eugenio Barba, amongst many others, have visited the College and have provided students with an original view of performance and theatre making in relation to contrasting cultures.

As a Rose Bruford student, you can take part in an international exchange programme at one of our highly regarded partner institutions around the world. A period of study in another country is an important component of several of our programmes and provides you with outstanding preparation for your professional life.

The two most obvious examples are the BA (Hons) European Theatre Arts, where students can spend up to one year in a European country, and the BA (Hons) American Theatre Arts, the second year of which may be spent studying abroad. Also, undergraduate students on programmes in the School of Design, Management and Technical Arts and some Postgraduate students are able to undertake a placement at professional repertory companies in the USA. Our overseas partners and companies are chosen with the utmost care and members of our teaching staff visit these institutions regularly to ensure that your experience is of the highest standard. The Erasmus Programme

All full-time undergraduate students in the College are encouraged to consider exchanges with other European Institutions. We are very proud of our track record in encouraging students to undertake a study period or placement abroad, with a great proportion of students studying at European partner institutions through the Erasmus Programme – the European Commission’s educational programme for higher education students, teachers and institutions, which encourages student and teacher mobility and promotes transnational cooperation projects among universities across Europe (UK Socrates Erasmus Council).

Commenting during a visit to the College, Mr Bill Rammell, former Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, said: “I am delighted to be able to visit Rose Bruford College to learn more about its proactive study abroad strategy, which not only allows students to develop as individuals but also gives them enhanced career prospects. It is clear to me that both staff and students at Rose Bruford share my passion for encouraging international student mobility and I applaud the College’s very successful efforts to date in sending their students to study in Europe and beyond.” The College is committed to further expanding its network of European and international collaboration, in order to continue to work across the broadest possible spectrum of performance traditions.

Exhange/visit the USA

Rose Bruford College has a long association with Stephen F Austin State University in Texas. Students from the ATA programme study there for a year; Texan students join the ETA programme in exchange. A similar arrangement exists with St Mary’s University, Minnesota, while our DMTA and postgraduate students undertake placements at Centre College, Kentucky and at its neighbouring professional theatres. Our attendance at the annual South Eastern Theatre Conference (SETC) – the US’s largest gathering of drama institutions – also means we are ever alert to the possibility of creating further opportunities for study in America.

Partnership Project

Collaboration with Centre de Formation Professionnelle aux Techniques du Spectacle Paris
Rose Bruford College is collaborating with Centre de Formation Professionnelle aux Techniques du Spectacle Paris on a three-year project supported through European Leonardo de Vinci funding.

The project is researching the use of new technologies alongside the development of new production structures and the evolution of economic frameworks as they affect technical and administrative personnel in the live performance industries.

FIRCTE projects (part of the The Leonardo da Vinci programme)
Rose Bruford is also part of a network of technical/artistic training institutions, theatres and professional organisations operating in the field of performing arts in Europe who have been developing the FIRCTE projects, which seek to improve and develop the vocational training in theatre production techniques.

Georgia Munnion

Student spotlight

Georgia Munnion, a second-year student on the BA (Hons) European Theatre Arts (ETA) programme, spent five months at the RESAD (Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático) in Madrid. She comments:

“My five months on placement were a focal point of my time at Rose Bruford, introducing me to a variety of new and challenging theatrical training techniques, which I will continue to use for my artistic development. Furthermore, I was given the opportunity to experience working in different cultural surroundings, learn a new language, obtain useful future contacts and grow as an independent individual. It gave me an insight into the opportunities on offer for my future career, in terms of direction and location. The ETA placements provided the final touch of perfection to an incredibly fulfilling programme.”
