Full-time undergraduate BA (Hons) study

All applicants to full-time undergraduate degree programmes must apply via UCAS.

Your application process

UCAS will send a copy of your application to us and, provided that you meet the entry requirements for the programme, you will be invited to an audition or interview. Following interview, we aim to let you know our decision as soon as possible. Please note that the vast majority of interviews and auditions are held between January and April and we recommend that you make yourself as available as possible during these months.

Meeting Rose Bruford's entry requirements?

We strongly believe that everyone should have an opportunity to consider higher education and therefore encourage applicants from diverse educational backgrounds. Qualification at ‘A’ level or equivalent is therefore only one of our measures – we also attach great importance to the interview and audition process, which is why we invite almost all of our applicants to attend an interview or audition and, where appropriate, give candidates the opportunity to provide a portfolio of work. The main criterion for offering a student a place at the College is that we are satisfied that you have the potential to complete your chosen programme of study.

Preparing for your audition

You should prepare your audition material as detailed in the programme specific advice and requirements which will be sent to you when you are invited to audition. Generally, for all programmes in the School of Performance, this involves presenting practical work. Take care to choose material that you feel inspired by; something that tells us something about the sort of performance work you like to do. We are interested in creating modern performers for today’s theatre and as such your audition can and should reflect who you are.

For the BA(Hons) Acting and Actor Musicianship programmes you will be asked to prepare one contemporary and one classical monologue; for the BA(Hons) European Theatre Arts and American Theatre Arts programmes you will be asked to prepare one relevant contemporary monologue.

You have applied for a programme in the School of Design, Management and Technical Arts – what will the interview be like?

Your visit will include:

  • A tour of the College and its facilities
  • An opportunity to discuss the programme with current students (during term time)
  • An individual interview with one or two programme tutors, including an opportunity to present your portfolio (see below).

We try to keep the interview as relaxed and informal as possible. There are no ‘right’ answers to the questions you will be asked, but you will probably feel that you are being put ‘on the spot’ and asked difficult, critical questions. We only have a short time to talk to each of you, and we need to get under the surface – this is not intended to undermine your confidence, though it may feel like it at the time! This is also your chance to find out about us, so use the tour and interview to find out what you need to know to help you make your decision about where to study.

What do I need to bring to the interview?

If you are invited to an interview for any programme in the School of Design, Management and Technical Arts we ask that you bring a portfolio with you, which will form a valuable starting point for discussion in your interview. For all programmes:

  • Show the range of work you have done and your interests, including relevant personal work as well as course work.
  • Don’t be too selective, and include materials that show your process as well as the final outcome, such as notes, plans, sketches, and schedules.
  • Present your work in a logical, ordered fashion – it doesn’t need to be elaborate
  • Make it clear where work has been made in collaboration with other people, and what aspects of the work are your own.
  • Keep audio, video or film work to a maximum of 5 minutes long. We cannot guarantee to have replay equipment available, so if possible you should bring your own computer to play your work on.

For visual design and craft programmes:

  • It is important that we see a variety of works in a variety of media, such as colour and texture studies, 2 & 3 dimensional work, photography, character drawing, sketch books containing visual notes and marks, found material, reference, and research
  • If you have previously designed set, costume or lighting for a performance, or made set, props or costumes, include drawings and photographs.

We are looking for:

  • Your ability to work expressively and communicate visually
  • Your ability to develop an idea through visual research within a creative process
  • Experimentation with colour, texture, space and form, in different media
  • The range of skills and techniques that you have developed so far.

Mature applications

If you are a mature applicant (aged 21 or over) you may not have to meet our formal requirements. We welcome applications from individuals with a range of qualifications and previous experience and will positively consider all applications from mature students. Mature students might also consider our Part-time Theatre Arts Programme, and our Distance Learning programmes.

Transferring from another institution or seeking accreditation of prior (experiential) learning

If you wish to transfer from another institution onto a full-time programme at Rose Bruford College and would like your academic credits to count towards your new programme, then please apply via UCAS.
