The NCDT accredited Costume Production programme will provide you with the understanding and skills needed to pursue a successful career in the production of historical and contemporary costumes and accessories. Our aim is to produce graduates who not only have an appreciation of the expertise and knowledge required to be a successful practitioner, but who also possess the vision and determination to become leaders in the field of costume production. Good professional practice requires an enquiring and analytical approach, and the programme will also provide you with a range of study and research skills that will drive your development as an interpretative artist and craftsperson.

The programme – which is taught by a team of highly experienced, practising professionals – is concerned with the interpretation of designs and is ideal for those who want to focus on the realisation and making aspects of costume and associated crafts. You will enjoy a range of practical experiences while working in collaboration with other theatre disciplines on College projects and productions staged in our own theatres or sometimes in London venues.

The Programme at a glance

Over three years, you will:

• Learn construction techniques and pattern cutting – both stand cutting and flat drafting
• Develop a strong, practical knowledge of the history of costume
• Learn to analyse contemporary theatre practice, styles and genres
• Learn the working of other technical departments
• Develop skills in specialised areas, including foundation wear and corsetry, dancewear, millinery, fabric painting and breaking down, and wig dressing
• Undertake a series of practical costume making projects
• Learn to work as a dresser during a performance, run the wardrobe department’s budget, and manage a team
• Carry out a variety of roles on College productions as wardrobe assistant, costume supervisor or costume maker
• Undertake a substantial research project into a costume subject of your choice
• Have the opportunity for a work placement in the industry or a period of study abroad
• Prepare for entry into your chosen profession.
