Opera Studies < backBA (Hons) (by online distance learning)

Please contact Dr Jane Schopf who would be delighted to provide more information about our BA Hons Opera Studies programme and Music Teachers Route: or on 020 8308 2647.

Started in 1997, our exciting Opera Studies programme is unique in the world being the only Distance Learning undergraduate programme focusing on opera as a performance art delving into all the constituent parts of this amazing and versatile art form. Apart from the main composers and historic periods you will be studying all about the libretto, the singer, the orchestra and conductor, the director, Shakespeare in opera, women in opera and many more. It is an ideal complement to vocal studies and equips directors and singers alike to fully appreciate the material they work with.

We also have a dedicated route through the programme for those wishing to go on to a PGCE in Music, which takes you beyond opera into the worlds of the symphony and song.

Our unique programme supports you throughout your studies with a personal Tutor for each module, as well as providing you with free access to a host of online resources including Grove Online, the Naxos Music and Video Libraries and Opera America’s online resources; as well as the opportunity to attend our blended learning Study Events.

The programme is based around a core set of compulsory modules which provide you with the framework within which to place your electives. Our unique material is given via our online campus with email and online chat room facilities for contacting Tutors. All assignment submissions are fully annotated to inspire and direct you to future improvements.

Distance Learning is an ideal way of studying while working/bringing up a family as you are in charge of your study time. With the wealth of free online study material we provide, you can study when and where is best for you.
