Head of School awarded Cultural Fellowship
Dr Paul Fryer awarded Likhachev Foundation cultural fellowship:
Dr Paul Fryer, Head of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, has been awarded a Cultural Fellowship by the Likhachev Foundation.
The Fellowship will enable Dr Fryer to spend two weeks in St Petersburg in the Summer developing collaborative projects with major arts organisations, and working on a new e.journal which will be published by the College’s Stanislavski Centre in partnership with the St Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts.
The Likhachev Foundation has announced 13 fellowships this year, 10 awarded to American nationals and 3 to Europeans. Dr Fryer is the only British fellow announced for 2010.
The Fellowships, which were inaugurated in 2008, are intended to promote cultural developments and to allow fellows to work on projects related to Russian culture. As well as arranging a series of focused meetings for each fellow, the Foundation also offers a cultural programme in St Petersburg and a seminar series at which each fellow will deliver a lecture on their individual project.
Dr Fryer’s previous work in this area has included publishing books on the opera singer, Lina Cavalieri (who enjoyed significant fame in St Petersburg) and a new English language edition of Sergei Bertennson’s memoirs of his time in America with Nemirovich-Danchenko. Earlier this year, his chronology of opera performances at the Mariinsky Theatre was published by EMP, and he has collaborated with the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music on the restoration of a rare silent film version of Ivan the Terrible.
