Literary Success for Distance Learning Student

Pat Riley is a third year BA in Theatre Studies distance learning student of Rose Bruford College.  She became very interested in the work of early twentieth century feminist playwright Githa Sowerby as a result of her first year studies at the College and, finding that little was known about Githa Sowerby, Pat went on to do extensive research into Githa's life with the help of Githa's 90-year-old daughter Joan with whom she managed to make contact.  The result is the first ever biography of Githa Sowerby.  It is called Looking for Githa, and was published in September 2009 by New Writing North with funds from Arts Council England and the Northern Rock Foundation.  The publication was timed to coincide with the first ever professional production on its native Tyneside of Githa Sowerby's best known play Rutherford & Son
