About the Course

The BA Opera Studies programme offers a unique opportunity to study opera at your own pace, working from home. The Rose Bruford programme is the only degree course in the world dedicated exclusively to the study of opera.

It aims to develop students’ understanding of all aspects of opera, ranging from the theatrical, musical and literary techniques composers and librettists use when creating new works, to the social, political and economic contexts in which operas have been and continue to be produced.

The course includes modules at three different levels. For the Certificate students have to complete all four compulsory modules at Level 1. The Diploma students also have to complete the two compulsory modules at Level 2 plus two 30 credit equivalent electives. Those taking the full degree programme need to take both compulsory ‘core’ modules and optional modules at all three Levels. The core modules consider the history of opera from its origins to the present day as well as equipping students with the knowledge and tools necessary to analyse it successfully; optional modules allow students to pursue particular areas of interest in more detail.

Those students taking the degree to Honours level also complete a dissertation on an operatic topic of their own choosing, guided by a specialist tutor.

Though the main teaching of the course takes place through correspondence, there are also frequent residential schools and study days which include lectures, seminars, tutorials, as well as visits to performances and opportunities to discuss the productions with members of the companies. These events also offer a great opportunity to meet tutors and fellow students, and will help to make your study of opera sociable and fun as well as academically rewarding.
