Spring 2010: A General Election and a World Cup – are either likely to deliver England’s dreams? Or do its dreams lie at a deeper, more magical level? Is England ‘only dreaming’, and are there ‘England’s’ dreams – or only the individual dreams of its hugely diverse inhabitants? In fact is England only a dream, and if so, who’s?
This was the starting point for workshops led by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens and renowned new writing director Simon Usher with graduating actors, actor musicians and directors and three of the most successful young playwrights working today in England: Bola Agbaje, (Olivier Award Winner for Outstanding Achievement and
Evening Standard nominee for Most Promising playwright 2008), Michael Bhim (Royal Court, Soho Theatre, Tricycle, Paines Plough, Hampstead Theatre) and Joel Horwood (Cameron Mackintosh Award and Edinburgh Fringe First Winner; Bush Theatre , Royal Court and Traverse, Edinburgh).
The four short plays subsequently written (one by each of the writers and the fourth by all three together) and performed here as a single show, may be dreams in England, beats from its pulse in this extraordinary spring, but will they be England’s Dreaming?
