About Alternative Dramaturgies
Emerging from our BA (Hons) in European Theatre Arts, this season brings together two professional directors with our students to create two original pieces of theatre of unique visual and physical poetry.
Guillaume Pigé of internationally acclaimed ensemble Theatre Re, and Emily Louizou of London-based theatre company Collide Theatre, taking as their inspiration the work of Tadeusz Kantor, have worked closely with our European Theatre Arts students, also in collaboration with students from our BA (hons) Creative Lighting Control, BA (Hons) Lighting Design, and BA (Hons) Stage Management.
Expect two creative pieces of theatre inspired by the work of Kantor. Palpable images and voices of chorus will give life to extraordinary characters. The two shows blend text with music, sound with movement, the intimate and the epic — each work drawing on a rich and distinct palette of references.
Be prepared to meet Gothic, absurd and surreal childhood ghosts inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s universe. And dance with the excessive, the outrageous, and bombastic reality born out of Emir Kusturica’s irresistible whirlwind world. One thing will be certain — dreams and reality won’t look different anymore.

Alone in the Crowd, Directed by Emily Louizou
Can a house truly be haunted? Can objects come to life?Alone in the Crowd is a new piece that blends references from multiple short stories and essays by Poe, as well as drawing inspiration from the Gothic genre and the Expressionist movement.
Inspired by some of Edgar Allan Poe’s most iconic Gothic short stories, this new piece will blend text with movement and music, in line with Emily Louizou’s signature style.
Led by Tadeusz Kantor’s ‘bio-objects’ and combined with the classic horror trope of the haunted house, the ensemble explores how bodies fuse with objects, how stories emerge from furniture, and how the bending of rules can create a new dream-like version of reality.
A visual poem about nightmares, doppelgängers, and haunted childhood memories.
