Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory
Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls follows the fight of Grace Fryer and her fellow dial painters against the United States Radium Corporation. Marie Curie’s element Radium, discovered in the early 1900s, was seen as a miracle cure for cancer and grew in popularity. It’s usage became capitalised on by the Corporation with the creation of luminous radium paint, sold to various miltary and medical markets in the form of watches and dials. However, a darker side of radium began to be uncovered as the women on the factory floor began to fall mysteriously ill. Deaths were hasitly hushed up, but media interest started to build and pressure was mounted on the Corporation, and its president Arthur Roeder, an idealist man, to do the right thing by the women and their families.
Follow a fast paced, shocking story which will have you laughing one minute and your heart breaking the next. It is unflinching tribute to the women who fought for what was right, changed labour laws and ultimately sacrificed everything for this.
