When a beautiful and gorgeously perfumed woman walks into a German bank to withdraw three thousand marks, a bank clerk is so bewitched, he makes off with sixty thousand marks and arrives at her hotel room. She rejects his advances, but the die is cast. He is running now, and there is no reason to stop. He turns his back on the daily grind and starts a journey of pleasure, extremity, and danger in a headlong search for meaning in a meaningless world. From Morning to Midnight was first performed in 1917 in Germany, following a five year ban for its scandalous portrayal of German authority figures.
