Our 2019 Symposium takes place on Monday 15, Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 April. This year’s Symposium, which focusses upon internationalism and inclusion is entitled Interactive Experiences: Playful junctions and journeys across borders.

We are delighted to welcome Jorge Lopes Ramos as the Symposium artistic director. Jorge is Executive Director of ZU-UK and a graduate of our BA (Hons) European Theatre Arts programme.

Interactive Experiences: Playful junctions and journeys across borders

For the 18th edition of the Rose Bruford College International Symposium, resident company ZU-UK* collaborates with RBC students and staff to curate a range of meetings and experiences with guests from the UK and around the globe.  Exploring cultural and creative diversity in the intersection between artistic disciplines, this year’s Symposium invites you to transit between familiar and unfamiliar spaces.

‘In a world where mainstream narratives normalize hate and fear, and where contemporary loneliness is a new epidemic, there is a need for shared rituals, new narratives and experiences that empower those most vulnerable to have a voice and participate in culture.’

Persis Jadé Maravala and Jorge Lopes Ramos, directors ZU-UK

This year’s Symposium will respond to the overwhelming growth of productions that describe themselves as ‘participatory’, ‘interactive’ and ‘immersive’ by exploring the role of the audience in the developing, making and experiencing of contemporary theatre and performance.  We invite Symposium contributors and attendees to help us question the relevance of old models for contemporary challenges, creating a shared temporary community from the 15th to the 17th April 2019 in Lamorbey Park, Kent.
