Students from the Rose Bruford College BA (Hons) Costume Production programme have been putting their skills to good use during lockdown by making scrubs for NHS Trusts and GP Practices across the country through the For The Love of Scrubs campaign.

For the Love of Scrubs was set up by NHS nurse Ashleigh Linsdell after identifying a shortage in supply for scrubs to frontline NHS staff during the 2020 COVID-19 Epidemic. She set up a facebook group to recruit an army of volunteers to make and supply their local hospitals with scrubs for front line workers.

After hearing about the campaign, Costume Production Subject Leader, Natasha Dodsworth asked every first year student to contact their local ‘For the Love of Scrubs’ group on Facebook and offer to produce scrubs as needed.

The project has also involved the support of Natasha’s local community. She explained:

“I sent out a plea locally on a WhatsApp neighbourhood group to receive donations of duvet covers and sheets so we could make the scrubs as sustainably as possible. After receiving kind donations of material, I sent them and the scrubs pattern to our students who are located across the country during lockdown.

The generosity continued with Graham Milton and his staff from SBS printers in Greenwich printing the A0 size patterns for free.”

Upon receiving the pattern and materials, the students got to work making the scrubs, which are also being marked as part of a self-taught module. One of the scrub makers is Chloe Pegg, who is sending her scrubs to Kettering Hospital, where her brother works.

She is delighted to be able to continue her studies whilst putting her skills and training towards a worthy cause:

“The scrubs project has been very important to me, as it has allowed me to still be connected to Rose Bruford College as well helping those working in the NHS. Everyone is doing their part during this time so I’m glad I’ve been given the opportunity to do mine alongside the rest of Level 4 Costume Production students.“
