Between 2004 and 2010 Tom worked for The National Theatre, as an actor and Music Director on two of Alan Bennett’s plays – The History Boys and The Habit of Art. Tom worked on The History Boys for 5 five years, in London’s West End, on UK and International Tours, and on Broadway. The production won 3 Olivier awards and 6 Tony Awards. The Habit Of Art was filmed for NTLive.
Composition and sound design credits include The Rivals, Suite in Three Keys and She Stoops to Conquer (Orange Tree), Little Women (York Theatre Royal), A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story (Nottingham Playhouse/Alexandra Palace/Birmingham Rep), The Game of Love and Chance (Arcola Theatre), Skellig, Holes (Nottingham Playhouse), Rapunzel, Jerusalem (Watermill Theatre), Love All, Mr & Mrs Nobody, Tonight at 8:30, Tomorrow at Noon (Jermyn Street Theatre), Murder for Two (Watermill Theatre/The Other Palace/UK tour), Handbagged, The Picture of Dorian Gray (English Theatre Frankfurt).
As Musical Director and Orchestrator, his work includes Camelot and Kiss Me, Kate (Watermill Theatre), Cabaret, Jekyll & Hyde and Ghost the Musical (English Theatre Frankfurt), Peter and the Starcatcher (Royal & Derngate Northampton), Monster Raving Loony (Soho Theatre/Theatre Royal Plymouth).
Industry Collaborations & Partnerships
Tom is represented by Helen Mumby at The Soho Agency.
Tom regularly collaborates with The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton on their large-scale Summer Youth Project.
Following a ten-year collaboration with Tim Godwin and The Thrift developing a bespoke approach to music and drama in SEND, Tom had an expressive arts residency at Riverside School in Foots Cray. Professor Jeremy Harrison has developed the partnership with Riverside School further, bringing the BA/MA sensory project into the heart of their community.
Tom regularly works with The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, having first worked with OT Artistic Director Tom Littler in 2009 on the first actor musician production of Sondheim’s musical Saturday Night.
Teaching & Mentorship
Tom supervises all music activities on the actor musician programme, including composition, arrangement and musical direction.
Tom supervises the singing curriculum on undergraduate courses.
As Director of Music, Tom collaborates with the College Executive Group supervising musical content for outward facing college events and using music to build community partnerships.
Tom supports the Student Union on music provision for student led events and performances.
