This could be as a formal part of your training (e.g. a placement or study exchange as part of one or more modules) or a non-assessed activity that allows you to develop your skills in a real-world context (e.g. working with a company for a period of time in a summer vacation or after graduation).

Study and training abroad is a life-changing experience; it enriches and extends your development as professionals, widens your international peer and professional networks, and increases your employability.

You are eligible to study abroad from the beginning of the second year of your undergraduate programme or after the first semester of your MA/MFA programme. It may also be possible to undertake a period of training during the year after you graduate. The majority of students undertake placements of between two and five months.

For students on certain programmes, training abroad is an integral part of the degree, with one or more modules undertaken abroad. These programmes have well-established and proven links with other Higher Education Institutions and/or companies in specific countries that have been specially chosen to complement and extend the training we provide at Rose Bruford. For more information about a specific programme, check the course pages. Current students should lookout for more information and online briefings about Study Abroad throughout the year.

Choosing a Placement

For those students with study abroad integrated into their programme, the programme team will brief you on the process of choosing your placement.

If you are interested in undertaking a study abroad placement as a part of your programme (for example undertaking a show role abroad), please speak to your programme team.

For any student wishing to undertake a placement outside of their programme, you should contact the College’s study abroad team, who can support you in identifying and brokering a placement.

Look out for the briefings on Study Abroad, which occur at various points in the year, for more information.

Financing Study Abroad

Rose Bruford College receives money from the UK Government’s Turing Scheme to provide financial support for students who wish to study or train abroad. Students who wish to take advantage of this funding need to apply via the College’s study abroad application process, details of which are published in the first semester of each year.

Successful applicants receive a financial grant as a contribution to their costs. The rates of this grant are set by the UK Government based on your chosen destination and length of time abroad. For disadvantaged students and those with specific learning needs, it is possible to receive up to 100% of the costs of studying abroad, though this needs to be applied for in the year before you intend to study abroad. Speak to the study abroad team about this if you think you might be eligible.

The College routinely applies for funding to support all students with a study abroad period as a set part of their studies (American Theatre Arts & European Theatre Arts programmes). Students on these programmes do not need to apply to the College for funding for this period of activity. They can, of course, apply for funding for other periods of study/training abroad.

For 2021-23, some of our study abroad activity continues to be funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ scheme. The same application process applies for students undertaking study/training abroad as part of the Erasmus+ scheme. Note: All funding is dependent on the level of the grant provided by the Turing Scheme each year.

My placement has immersed me in intense and rewarding physical training and broadened my horizons of the possibilities of theatre making. Living and training closely with my cohort and the community has helped me grow as an individual due to the caring safe space that is created by the company from the moment you arrive. Training intensely abroad can feel very out of your comfort zone, however it is a leap worth taking and something that will shape me significantly as an individual.'”– Lili, second year student.
