Robert Pearce studied BA American Theatre Arts, and graduated in 2005. We caught up with Robert aka Mama G and asked them to share their experiences of studying at Rose Bruford College and how their education has helped them to succeed in the industry.
What did you like most about studying at Rose Bruford College?
I actually loved the campus, which was still being built in my first term! It felt like a really collaborative environment and had a great energy. On ATA we got to work on a really wide variety of disciplines, from acting to stage management, which meant that we worked with practitioners from all over the world and with incredible backgrounds in the arts.
How has your course helped you to get to where you are today?
ATA is all about variety and really opened up the world of theatre for me. I went to Rose Bruford knowing that I loved pantomime, and assumed that acting was the natural path for me to take. I do panto and focus on acting now, but the course is designed so you experience all the aspects of creating a performance – from sweeping the stage to producing what goes on it. That put me in really good stead for a career that has encompassed stage management, performing, directing, writing, producing, marketing and just about everything else you need to put on a show!
What has been the highlight of your career to date?
I think the top three would be:
Performing my own pantomime Off-Broadway at the SoHo Playhouse, which was founded by Edward Albee.
Having a picture book published, which I got to announce at the Hay Festival (that’s a toofer!)
And a national tour with Hollywood and West End legend Tommy Steele!
How have you stayed connected to Rose Bruford College since graduation?
I’ve popped into talk to ATA students about life post-graduation, and I STILL email my old tutors and tell them what I’m up to! They’ve been very supportive and have both seen me perform professionally several times since I graduated. I think I’m still in touch with just about everyone I was on the course with. It’s amazing to see what everyone is up to!
What would you say to a student who is thinking of applying for your course today?
Do it – but make sure it feels like the right place for you! I visited lots of universities and drama schools before I chose Rose Bruford; but when I visited the campus I knew immediately it was my vibe. Do your research and look into the local area, both online and in person. Work out what you want to achieve from your time studying (the achievements don’t necessarily have to be academic either – that could be an added extra!) If after all of that Rose Bruford feels like the right place for you – go for gold! You’ll have a great time!
