Sophie Cartman studied BA American Theatre Arts, and graduated in 2005. We caught up with Sophie and asked her to share her experiences of studying at Rose Bruford College and how her education has helped her to succeed in the industry.

What did you like most about studying at Rose Bruford College?

Location, rural homely warm feel, course leaders, new life experiences such as getting to study abroad in Texas.

How has your course helped you to get to where you are today?

The course has filled me with the knowledge of the American theatre world and history and inspired and educated me about certain playwrights/ intellectuals. It gave me confidence to pursue my acting career with full well rounded training in voice and movement but also as well as equipping me with knowledge of the theatre industry as a business.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Death of Salesman west end transfer with Wendell Pierce and Sharon D Clarke and this is one of my favourite American plays. Working a summer season at the Royal Shakespeare Company, winning the best actress BUFF award for a lead in an award winning indie film “Four O’Clock flowers’ which also is now for sale and to rent on Prime Video. Getting to work with very experienced directors such as Marianne Elliot, Indhu Rubasingham, Tom Morris, Blanche McIntyre and Gregory Doran. Working on a play in Boston and New York for 3 months. I have also done TV roles filming at BBC Borehamwood, ITV in Cornwall and for Paramount plus in Liverpool.

How have you stayed connected to Rose Bruford College since graduation?

I’ve stayed in contact with classmates who are now some of my best friends and I’m still in contact with course leaders Steve and Tony. I have been to see Steve Dykes in Pygmalion at the Old Vic too!

What would you say to a student who is thinking of applying for your course today?

It is a wonderful course-go for it. It will propel your confidence in yourself and expand your theatre knowledge and academic experience, giving you a comprehensive insight into all aspects of the theatre world including acting, directing, musical theatre, playwriting and backstage work.
