Final-year BA Acting student Sofia Bryan Compton is preparing for one of the biggest moments of her professional career after being selected as a finalist in the prestigious Spotlight Prize.
Sofia is one of just 40 graduating performers from 60 drama schools across the UK and Ireland to reach this year’s finals and has been shortlisted for the Screen Prize, recognising some of the country’s most promising emerging acting talent.
Organised by Spotlight, the annual Spotlight Prize has been launching acting careers for more than 70 years. Former finalists include Dame Judi Dench, Brian Cox, Jim Broadbent, Ben Whishaw, Bessie Carter, Edward Bluemel and Rosalind Eleazar.
Earlier this month, the Screen Prize finalists recorded their monologues at the Spotlight Studios under the direction of Paulette Randall MBE, herself a Rose Bruford alumna.
The performances will now be judged by an esteemed panel of casting directors and actors before the winner is announced.
Each year, Rose Bruford College students are selected for the Spotlight Prize, continuing the College’s strong presence within one of the industry’s most respected graduate showcases.
Recent Bruford finalists include Lewis Shepherd, shortlisted for the prize in 2022, who has since gone on to portray Dele Alli in the National Theatre production of James Graham’s Dear England, as well as appearing in the BBC’s four-part television adaptation.
2017 finalist Jake Lampert has built an impressive screen career, with recent credits including the BBC series Riot Women, alongside fellow alumna Rosalie Craig (Class of 2001), and Apple TV+’s space race thriller Star City, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin and Rhys Ifans.
2015 finalist Asan N’Jie has also developed an extensive film and television portfolio, with roles in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, as well as appearances in Vera, Holby City, Casualty, Emmerdale, and Riot Women.
Each participating drama school nominates just one student to represent its graduating cohort, making Sofia’s selection a significant achievement and recognition of the talent, dedication and artistic development she has demonstrated throughout her training at Rose Bruford College.
Alongside the Screen Prize, finalists for the Stage Prize will perform live before an invited audience of leading casting directors, agents and producers at the annual Spotlight Prize Showcase on Wednesday 8 July, where an industry jury will select this year’s winners.
Established in 1954, the Spotlight Prize is widely regarded as one of the industry’s leading showcases for graduating actors, offering finalists an invaluable opportunity to perform in front of influential figures from across theatre, film and television as they take their first steps into the profession.
Everyone at Rose Bruford College wishes Sofia the very best of luck in the Spotlight Prize Finals.
