Welcome to Rose Bruford College.

Rose Bruford College is a conservatoire: a specialist higher education institution delivering intensive, practice-driven creative education at the highest level. Founded in 1950 in south-east London, we have spent more than seventy-five years training artists, makers, technicians, and thinkers across the creative industries.

Our founding story

We were founded in 1950 by Rose Bruford, Edith Scorer, and Mary Henniker-Heaton. Rose Bruford, a trained actress and verse and speech teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, wanted to do something the existing higher education providers were not set up for: unify theatre practice and drama education into one curriculum, training actors who could teach and teachers who could act. Together with Scorer, a distinguished opera singer who had performed across European capitals, and Henniker-Heaton, who became the College’s first Registrar, she built a College on her own terms. That founding instinct, to make excellent creative education work differently and for a wider range of disciplines, still shapes what we do.

What we do

We are an academic organisation and a creative laboratory. We hold degree-awarding powers and offer Foundation, Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught, and Postgraduate Research provision. Our programmes span design, screen, broadcast, gaming, immersive practice, performance, directing, writing, technical production, lighting, sound, and creative research. Our students and graduates design for screen, build worlds in gaming companies, perform on stage and on camera, and work on major productions across the creative industries globally. Our staff publish academic research, attract funding, and maintain professional practices alongside their teaching.

What makes us distinctive

We operate on conservatoire values that distinguish us from broader university provision: selectivity, intensity, industry connection, and globally recognised training.

What sets us apart is the combination of being founded by three women in 1950 who built something new on their own terms, being both academic and professional with degree-awarding powers and direct creative industries connections, reaching beyond theatre into the full breadth of the creative industries, welcoming talent from every background into a diverse, inclusive, international community, and a campus unlike any other London conservatoire, set in protected parkland with a Grade II listed manor house and 600-year-old oak trees.

Our campus

Our campus is set in protected parkland in Sidcup, south-east London. No other London conservatoire offers this environment. The combination of green space, heritage buildings, and intensive creative work gives our students room to think and recover between the demands of conservatoire training.

Our approach

We seek creative potential wherever it exists, then nurture it to professional excellence. The work is demanding because the work matters. Our graduates leave equipped to build the creative lives they came here for, and to shape the work itself.

Our vision, mission and values
