Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance has announced the appointment of Shakira Martin as Head of Student Experience.
Ms. Martin joins the Sidcup-based college following a two-year tenure as President of the National Union of Students (NUS). Her role will focus on ensuring a positive experience for students throughout their learner journey covering student recruitment, admissions, student services and study support.
Ms. Martin is relishing using her knowledge and experience in the role:
“I am super delighted to be joining the Rose Bruford College team. It is an excellent college that champions performing arts and the creative industries, while recognising the need and importance of promoting diversity and inclusion, not only within the college but also in the creative arts sector globally.
I am really excited as Head of Student Experience to be able to support the college and colleagues to step outside of their comfort zone and go into the corners of society often forgotten about for new fresh talent.
I aim to ensure that every student who comes to the college has an exceptional student experience throughout their time here and beyond because it is not only about getting students in….but making sure they can get on while they are here.”
Prior to her role as NUS President, Ms. Martin was NUS Vice President for Further Education from 2015-2017 and President of the Students’ Union at Lewisham and Southwark College from 2014-2015. She has also had representative roles with the Office for Students and UCAS.
Rose Bruford College Principal, Clarie Middleton, believes the appointment signifies the colleges continued commitment to creating an inclusive environment for students:
“I’m delighted to welcome Shakira to the College and looking forward to drawing on her expertise and shared dedication to championing higher education access and participation by students from all backgrounds. Her role is pivotal in ensuring students are supported and empowered throughout their studies as they prepare for careers in the creative industries.”
