Welcome

This audition is an opportunity for us to get to know you as a performer, collaborator and creative thinker.

The course brings together different approaches to acting and performance from around the world, and the audition reflects that spirit of exploration and discovery. Rather than focusing solely on a finished performance, we’re interested in how you engage with new ideas, respond to creative challenges and work with other people.

Throughout the day, you’ll take part in practical workshop activities as well as an individual audition. We want to understand how you approach performance, communicate your ideas and develop your work. Most importantly, we’re looking for applicants who are curious, open-minded and excited by the possibility of learning through training and collaboration.

The Audition Process

International Acting Practices has a single-stage audition process.

Following your application, you will be invited to attend an audition, either on campus or online if attendance in person is not possible.

The audition consists of two parts: a practical workshop and an individual audition.

Practical Workshop

The majority of the day takes place in a practical workshop led by a member of the teaching team.

You will take part in a range of activities that may include:

  • Voice work
  • Movement work
  • Text exploration
  • Individual creative tasks
  • Pair work
  • Group exercises

Throughout the workshop, you will have opportunities to explore your prepared material, work with other applicants and reflect on your experiences.

Individual Audition

Following the workshop, you will perform at least one of your prepared speeches for the panel.

You may then be given a redirect and invited to explore a different approach to the material.

Preparing for Your Audition

The best preparation is to arrive ready to take part.

Take some time to familiarise yourself with the structure of the day and make sure you’re comfortable participating in practical workshop activities. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and, if you’re attending on campus, arriving in good time before the start of the audition.

The recall day is designed to be collaborative and interactive, so you’ll get the most from the experience by being willing to engage with the workshops, work with other applicants and try new things.

If you have questions about what to expect, what to bring or how to prepare, please visit our Auditions & Interviews FAQs.

What We’re Looking For

We’re interested in applicants who are curious, creative and open to new ideas.

Throughout the day, we’ll be looking at how you engage with workshop activities, respond to direction and work with other people. We’re interested in your imagination, communication skills and willingness to experiment.

The course encourages students to explore different approaches to acting and performance, so we enjoy meeting applicants who are open-minded, adaptable and excited by the opportunity to discover new ways of working.

We value applicants who contribute positively to the room, engage fully with the process and show a genuine interest in developing their practice. You don’t need to have all the answers or deliver a perfect performance. We’re much more interested in how you approach challenges, respond to new experiences and develop your thinking throughout the day.

Most importantly, we’re looking for applicants who demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for learning, collaboration and creative exploration.

For Parents, Carers, Supporters and Teachers

Preparing for an audition can feel exciting and sometimes a little daunting. The most valuable support you can offer is helping the applicant prepare their speeches thoroughly, arrive ready to participate and approach the experience with confidence and an open mind.

This audition is designed to be an active, workshop-based experience. Applicants will spend much of the day working with staff and fellow applicants through a range of practical activities before completing an individual audition.

We encourage applicants to focus on engaging with the process rather than delivering a perfect performance. The workshop gives us the opportunity to see how they respond to new ideas, work with others and develop their thinking, as well as their performance skills.

For on-campus auditions, parents, carers, supporters and teachers are welcome to wait in our on-site café while the audition takes place, explore the local area, or return at the end of the day.
