Rose Bruford College has announced two contemporary productions as highlights of its Spring Season 2026, running from 14 February to 20 March at Greenwich Theatre and Bridewell Theatre. The season offers audiences the opportunity to experience recent, critically acclaimed work reimagined by an emerging ensemble of performers at a pivotal moment in their professional training.

The season launches at Greenwich Theatre with Jez Butterworth’s The Hills of California, which premiered at the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2024 under the direction of Sam Mendes and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. Rose Bruford’s production is directed by Daniel Bailey, Associate Artistic Director at the Bush Theatre. Bailey is known for directing the award-winning Red Pitch, which transferred from the Bush Theatre to the West End.

Later in the season, Eve Leigh’s Wildfire Road receives its London premiere, directed by Dr Ben Buratta, Rose Bruford’s Head of Performance. Together, these two productions place urgent questions of memory, power and the climate crisis centre stage.

Alongside these works, the Greenwich programme also features the cult musical Ruthless by Joel Paley and the Tony Award–winning rock musical Spring Awakening by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. These productions showcase the versatility, musicality and ensemble skill of Rose Bruford’s graduating cohort across text-based drama, comedy and large-scale musical theatre.

The season extends beyond Greenwich Theatre, with Rabiah Hussain’s Word-Play, presented at Bridewell Theatre. The production is directed by Philip J Morris, whose work includes End and Pericles for the National Theatre’s Public Acts programme and First Encounters: Romeo and Juliet for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Morris is also the recipient of the 2025 Excellence in Arts Education Award at the UK Theatre Awards. Word-Play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in 2023, directed by Nimmo Ismail, and explores how language enters public consciousness and reverberates across generations, examining the power of words to shape identity, belief and social change.

The Spring Season marks a significant milestone for the College, placing its final-year BA Acting and BA Actor-Musicianship students in the heart of the capital and offering audiences the opportunity to encounter bold, ambitious work by the next generation of theatre-makers on major London stages.

Dr Ben Buratta, Head of Performance at Rose Bruford College said:

“Spring is always an exciting time at Rose Bruford, and this year’s season promises to be one of our strongest. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our undergraduate actors and actor-musicians to work in collaboration with design and technical students to showcase their talent. We’re also delighted to welcome directors and practitioners who are leading in the industry to collaborate with our students. We hope audiences enjoy the breadth and ambition of their work.”

Opening the season, The Hills of California is set in a rundown Blackpool guest house during the scorching summer of the mid-1970s. The play reunites the Webb sisters as long-buried memories of ambition, cruelty and lost innocence resurface while their mother lies dying upstairs. Rose Bruford’s production offers a fresh interpretation of Butterworth’s acclaimed play, brought to life by a graduating ensemble at a defining moment in their development.

Later in the season, Wildfire Road unfolds aboard a flight to Tokyo that has been hijacked while wildfires burn below. Blending thriller, dark comedy and physical theatre, the play interrogates the climate crisis from an unexpected and exhilarating angle. Eve Leigh’s fast-paced, sharply observed writing is realised through song, movement and dynamic ensemble performance, as honeymooners, middle managers and spontaneous solo travellers confront the unsettling reality that there may be no easy landing ahead.

All productions are created and performed by Rose Bruford College final-year undergraduate students, supported by professional directors and the College’s academic and technical staff.

Rose Bruford College’s Spring Season 2026 features amateur productions by arrangement with Nick Hern Books, Independent Talent Group, Concord Theatricals, and Music Theatre International Ltd.
