Acting BA (Hons) graduate Jessica Gunning won the BAFTA for Supporting Actress for her performance in Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. A first-time nominee, Gunning added the win to an already impressive list of accolades for the role, including an Emmy, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe.
Baby Reindeer marked a major success for Netflix, with Gunning portraying Martha, an unsettling former lawyer who stalks Donny Dunn – played by the show’s creator, Richard Gadd. While accepting the award, Gunning said: “I sometimes do this kind of cheesy thing where I look back on the younger me and moments in my life, and I imagine the kind of then-me seeing me now, and think, ‘Little did we know.’” Industry outlet Deadline noted: “This kind of sweep for one role in the same awards season is incredibly rare, if not unprecedented.”
Mr Bates vs The Post Office won Best Limited Drama. The landmark series galvanised public awareness and action around the Post Office Horizon scandal. Sara Huxley, a Fellow of Rose Bruford College and 2013 BA (Hons) Acting graduate, co-produced the drama. Toby Jones, an Honorary Fellow, also starred in the series. ITV received the Television Special Award for commissioning the programme, recognising the role of public service broadcasting in telling powerful, homegrown stories that lead to meaningful societal change.
Mr Loverman stood out as the only programme to win in two competitive categories, earning awards for Leading Actor and Supporting Actor. The series was based on the 2013 novel by Bernardine Evaristo, a Community Theatre Arts graduate and former President of the College, which previously earned the Jerwood Uncovered Prize.
