This annual project is based on the pedagogical framework of experiential learning, which prioritises practical, professional-level experience to deepen understanding and mastery of taught subject matter.
As a part of a key module assessment, the project challenges students to oversee the production of a live music show at the Rose Theatre. The event is unique in the higher education sector due to its scale, duration and connection with industry networks.
Beginning in August of each year, students embark on a five-month process that involves planning, design, experimentation, and refinement. The project offers an invaluable opportunity for students to gain practical experience working on a large-scale event in a real-world setting.
Driven by student advocacy, the event has evolved to incorporate an industry night, demonstrating a deliberate alignment with industry needs and offering career opportunities for Bruford’s production arts graduates.
The Live Event Project offers hands-on learning and mentorship opportunities for students to acquire advanced lighting control techniques, problem-solving skills, project management expertise and real-world experience. The project fosters professionalism and prepares students for future careers through experiential learning, industry engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Thanks to partnerships with sponsors NEG Earth Lights, ER Productions, and Light Motif, students gain access to cutting-edge technology and professional expertise, enriching their learning experience and expanding their professional networks. The event is a testament to the college’s commitment to producing global artists and industry leaders in event lighting.
Owen Foster, Creative Lighting Control BA (Hons) student, Production manager for The Live Event Project 2024, says:
What I enjoyed most was that we got to have a family and friends’ night, which allowed our close friends and family to see what we do and understand our future.
The industry evening allowed us to create key connections. It also allowed me to understand how a live events production should run.
Professor Randall Whittaker, Principal and CEO of Rose Bruford College, says:
