The Welkin by Lucy Kirkwood
As the country waits for Halley’s Comet, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for a shocking murder. When she claims to be pregnant, a jury of 12 women are trapped in the courthouse and made to decide if she’s telling the truth, or simply trying to escape the noose.
With a mob baying for blood outside, the matrons wrestle with their new authority, and the devil in their midst.
Set in rural Suffolk in 1759, Kirkwood’s muscular story dazzles with ambition in its interrogation of the structures that inflict violence on women.

Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine by Lynn Nottage
Fabulation, or the Re-Education of Undine, follows successful and high-powered African-American publicist Undine Barnes Calles on an unexpected journey, after her smooth-talking husband disappears with her hard-earned fortune.
Nottage’s powerful storytelling skill gives Fabulation its remarkably unique and touching tone. Through the fast moving plot and diverse cast of characters, this social satire hits notes of relatable struggle to understand oneself as it delivers a comic but cautionary tale against giving up your true self to build an identity based on shame alone.
