Jo Hunnisett studied BA Costume Production, and graduated in 2013. We caught up with Jo and asked her to share her experiences of studying at Rose Bruford College and how her education has helped her to succeed in the industry.
What did you like most about studying at Rose Bruford College?
I loved my three years at Rose Bruford College. I chose the Costume Production course because it focused more specifically on making costumes and working on shows, something I’d always wanted to do. It was great for preparing me for the industry because it taught me every aspect of the business, from budget meetings through to the rehearsal process, tech period, and even backstage etiquette, all during a real life show run, in a learning environment. I even learnt how to iron a shirt properly, quickly, & efficiently, which was invaluable when faced with 50 shirts on a laundry call!
How has your course helped you to get to where you are today?
I secured my first job on the production of Scrooge, after completing a work experience placement while studying. Over the years I’ve worked with many other Rose Bruford College graduates and have even employed a number myself. I always know that they’ll hit the ground running on their first day at work. The course helped me transition from student, to graduate, to employee smoothly, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
What has been the highlight of your career to date?
My career has taken me to places and provided me with opportunities I could never have imagined; I’ve worked across the UK and the world, including a North America tour of ‘Message in a Bottle’ with a trip over to Australia to work at the Sydney Opera House; a real pinch me moment. I’m now Head of Wardrobe at Starlight Express, an exciting job where no two days are the same, with new creative challenges to overcome and a crazy environment to navigate.
How have you stayed connected to Rose Bruford College since graduation?
I’m still in contact with my course tutor Tash nearly ten years after graduating and have close relationships with other students there at the same time who were designers and scenic artists. That’s the impact of Rose Bruford College, it provides such strong connections.
