Each year, the competition sees teams of lighting designers, technicians, manufacturers, and students coming together to create external lighting installations across Rose Bruford College’s campus, using a limited selection of kit and in only 180 minutes, with prizes awarded by a panel of judges.
The judges for this year’s Technical Award included Andrew Bissell (SLL Immediate Past President), Kael Gillam (Principle Lighting Designer at Hoare Lea) and Juan Ferrari (Project Director at Hoare Lea).
Whilst the Artistic Award was judged by Emma Cogswell (IALD Projects Manager), Beatrice Bertolini (IALD Regional Coordinator and Lighting Designer at Equation Lighting) and Sofia Alexiadou (Programme Director for Rose Bruford’s Creative Lighting Control BA (Hons) and Light in Performance MA courses).
Prizes awarded are the SLL Technical Award, the SLL Artistic Award (supported by the International Association of Lighting Designers), and the coveted Peer Prize, decided by the contestants taking part. This year’s competition was sponsored by Lumino Distribution Ltd, Urbis Schréder and Centre Stage Solutions.

The awards were presented by an esteemed panel of industry professionals and dignitaries, including Kael Gillam, Emma Cogswell and Deputy Mayor of Bexley, Nigel Bates.
Each year, the competition welcomes teams from UCL’s Light and Lighting MSc course, along with a team from Rose Bruford College, providing participants with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, experimenting with lighting techniques and working alongside practising lighting professionals. Students from Rose Bruford’s Light in Performance MA programme who took part this year include; Sammy Kissin, Aaron Malloy, Joe Doody, Chiara Bowker and Nurul Wardani.

Students enrolled in Rose Bruford College’s Creative Lighting Control BA(Hons), Design for Performance BA(Hons) and Stage Management BA(Hons) courses also supported the event with their expertise in lighting, design and event production.
