Design for architecture and the built environment is increasingly engaged not only with physical structures but also the experience of inhabitants and users of buildings and spaces. There has been a fundamental shift in the way public buildings are perceived and used by their audiences: notions of ambience and spectatorship are applied to architecture in new and surprising ways, while digital and new material technologies are used to make buildings that are highly dynamic. ‘Performance’ now provides a vital and productive way to think about, make, and light architecture.
Embedded in Industry
The BA (Hons) Lighting Design for Architecture is delivered in conjunction with the Lighting Education Trust (LET), offering students access to world-class training and work placement opportunities across the architectural lighting industries, alongside the College’s established training and professional links in the creative industries.
The BA (Hons) Lighting Design for Architecture has a strong international scope, working in close collaboration with industry and education partners from across Europe and beyond to offer students opportunities to have a period of study abroad. Current international educational partners for the programme are Jönköping University in Sweden and HAWK Hildesheim in Germany.
This unique and highly vocational programme offers a practice based, clearly structured and highly accessible pathway into studying lighting for architecture and environment at undergraduate level.
The use of light in architecture has changed considerably in recent years, triggered by both technological change and the creation of increasingly theatrical, experiential and innovative key projects and buildings nationally and internationally. The BA (Hons) Lighting Design for Architecture is ideally placed to prepare graduates for careers in this vibrant and global industry, through its close industry connections and use of internships, a strong focus on vocational training, collaborative idea generation, and access to specialist lighting laboratories on campus.
The programme sits alongside our established BA (Hons) Lighting Design programme, sharing some of its teaching and core practices across level 4, exploring light as a material. Level 5 and 6 offer students specialist training, industry placements/internships and project work within the built environment sector.
Our graduates leave us as creative and resourceful lighting designers, able to marry art with technology and the conceptual with the practical. Graduates have gone on to work as lighting designers for a range of architectural and lighting design companies, such as BDP and studio fractal.
Students can visit a wide range of universities and companies for work placements / internships and study exchange, including through the Erasmus grant scheme in Europe and our partner universities in the USA.
