This course is for teachers, performers, creators of performance and embodied theorists who are interested in somatic research as the basis of new forms and technique.
 

This course offers a series of closely associated contemporary vocabularies of deep embodiment and compositional forms. The work draws from ongoing research into sensing and perceiving as the primary source for appropriate response, as an actor, director, dancer, choreographer, physical performer. These sources include mindfulness-awareness meditation practices, experiential anatomy, and developmental movement drawn from Body Mind Centering® and the Six Viewpoint work of Mary Overlie and Wendell Beavers. The online format includes lecture, discussion, directed physical practice, and support for individual research. Students will need a limited space to move as part of their work space during the online sessions.

Tutor profiles

Wendell Beavers, a dancer, performer, and educator, co-founder and early Director of Movement Research in New York; founded Naropa University's MFA Theatre: Contemporary Performance Program in 2004, Directing that program until 2016. He was a founding faculty member and Director (1984-1990) of The Experimental Theatre Wing (ETW) at NYU teaching there from 1979-2003 where he was involved in applying the Viewpoints in collaboration with originator Mary Overlie. He currently teaches, directs and performs under the auspices of his company SomaticPerformer. He is Emeritus Professor of Performance at Naropa University. He has studied extensively with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, developer of Body Mind Centering® creating his own Developmental Technique™ from her work. Recent/current Guest Artist Residencies include Ohio University, SITI CO., NYU/ETW & Collaborative Arts BFA, Nine Years Theater/Singapore, University of Colorado, Rose Bruford University, Toneelschool/Maastricht,  Vertico CO/Madid, and Concordia University, Montreal Que.

Erika Berland, is a founding faculty and co-creator of the unique movement curriculum of the MFA Theater: Contemporary Performance Program at Naropa University. She has been in the forefront of creating new techniques and applications of Bonnie Cohen’s ground breaking work (Body Mind Centering®), and post-modern dance techniques in the service of a new aesthetic—fully integrating psycho-physical sources of the actor, and clarity of form, and articulation of the dancer. Erika was instrumental in the development of the first application of movement analysis to fitness training at Sports Training Institute and Plus One Fitness in NYC where among her many clients were, Robin Williams, Kevin Kline, Joel Grey and Glenn Close.  An early student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the meditation master and founder of Naropa University, and longtime teacher of meditation, Erika has researched the integration of meditation practice and view in the Buddhist tradition with performance techniques and holistic support for the performer. She is a Certified Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering® , Licensed Massage Therapist, and  Registered Movement Therapist Her publications include chapters on performance training in Movement for Actors, 2nd ed. (Allworth Press 2017) and Physical Dramaturgy (Routledge Press 2018). Her first book, Sitting: The Physical Art of Meditation, was published in 2017.
